     The  United States leads the world in occurrence of burglaries with about four burglaries occurring  every minute; that’s one every 15 seconds.
     Around 60 percent of burglars used forcible entry to get into home, while  30 percent entered through an unlocked door, window or other opening without force.  The front door is the chosen entry for 33% of burglars, especialy if it is an older style hollow wooden model.
​     A study by the University of North Carolina at Charlotte’s Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology found that most burglars try to determine if a house has an alarm system before attempting entry. Other research substantiates these findings.  Most convicted burglars say that they intentionally avoided homes with security systems.      Why isn't an out of the box smoke detector from the local hardware store sufficient?  
     The ONLY thing it will do is make a loud noise warning you  if there is smoke or fire in your home.  This will be enough IF you are home and IF you have kept the batteries replaced in it and IF everyone in the home can hear the beep or whatever sound it makes.  
     Does that seem like too many "ifs" when you consider that 84% of fire related deaths in the U.S. were in home fires?

    The  National Fire Protection Association reports the following:  
*During 2007-2011, home structure fires killed an estimated average of 2,570 people and caused an average of 13,210 reported civilian (non-firefighter) injuries per year.
* Males were more likely to be killed or injured in home fires than females (56% of the deaths and 53% of the injuries)
*Only 13% of the U.S. population is 65 or older, but 30% of the home fire fatalities were at least 65 years of age.
*The percentage of fatal home fire victims under five years of age fell from 18% in 1980 to 6% in 2011, while the percentage of victims 65 or older increased from 19% to 31% over the same period.
* During 2007-2011, cooking equipment was the leading cause of home fires and home fire injuries.
*Smoking was the leading cause of home fire deaths.
*While 22% of the deaths and 10% of injuries were caused by fires started by smoking materials, one-third of the fire deaths and 15% of the injuries in the 65 and older age group resulted from these fires.
*Three out of five (61%) people killed in fires started by playing with a heat source were children under five. However, fires started by heating equipment caused 27% of the deaths in this age group vs. 24% of the deaths caused by playing.

24/7 Carbon Monoxide Monitoring

      Often called the silent killer, carbon monoxide is an invisible, odorless, colorless gas created when fuels (such as gasoline, wood, coal, natural gas, propane, oil, and methane) burn incompletely. In the home, heating and cooking equipment that burn fuel can be sources of carbon monoxide (CO).
​      CO is measured in a ratio called ppm(parts per million).  5 ppm means 5 out of 1 million. So if your home has 5ppm of CO, there are 5 CO molecules for every million molecules in the air.
     How do you know if the level of CO in your home is too high?  Even in homes without gas appliances, there could be CO. While this depends on your age, size and health, here are some common thresholds of carbon monoxide:
  • 0.5-5 ppm – According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), this is the usual range for homes without gas stoves or other gas appliances.
  • Under 70 ppm – Most people have no ill effects when exposed to ranges below 70 ppm for short periods of time. Prolonged exposure (6-8) hours can cause dizziness and headaches. Also, those with heart problems may experience chest pain, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).
  • 100 ppm – Slight headache when exposed for 2 hours or longer.
  • 150-200 ppm – Prolonged exposure at these levels often leads to disorientation and unconsciousness and can also lead to death.
     Long exposure to low levels of CO can be as dangerous as short amount of exposure to high levels. 
     You probably have a CO detector or alarm in your home laready, maybe even a CO monitor, BUT these commonly found devices are NOT nearly as effective as our 24/7 active monitoring!  Your current devices probably have a limited period of full functionality.  They probably depend on batteries, which we are all guilty of not replacing, or even taking them out altogether if the device malfunctions.  Last but not least, by the time an alrm sounds (if at all) it may be TOO LATE!
